About CMI

CMI exists to meet the needs of the metalcasting industry through the development and delivery of continuing, scientific and technical education. As the educational arm of the American Foundry Society, the Cast Metals Institute was founded on the belief that foundry personnel can achieve maximum effectiveness now and in the future only by participating in a continuing education program. Since holding its first courses in 1957, CMI has provided instruction for over 86,000 individuals through more than 3,000 courses. Intensive, specialized education for metalcasters, by metalcasters is what CMI is all about.

Classes are offered in a variety of formats including lecture, lab and internet. Short format courses and live webinars are also offered. Lab courses are held at participating colleges and universities across the U.S., and lecture courses are held both at AFS/CMI headquarters and at various facilities around the country, depending on AFS Chapter requests. Course topics fall into the areas of melting, sand, chemically bonded sand, ferrous metals, nonferrous metals, gating and risering, engineering and investment casting technologies. For more information, or to purchase courses, click here.

CMI also offers certification programs in the areas of General Foundry Technology, Chemically Bonded Sand Technology, Ferrous Metals Technology and Nonferrous Metals Technology (each consisting of 5 courses). Certification is earned after completing each of the 5 courses and passing the corresponding exams for each class. Scholarships are available for those wishing to complete a certification program and are awarded yearly. Applications are due by May 31 of each year.  More information on scholarships can be found by clicking here.
